Description

The classic patty melt combines juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese between golden, buttery toasted bread. It’s the ultimate comfort food that’s both hearty and delicious, perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

1 sweet yellow onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter, divided

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

8 ounces 90/10 ground beef

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

4 slices sandwich bread

4 slices Swiss cheese

Mustard, optional

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 25 minutes until golden brown. Add apple cider vinegar, stir, and set aside.
  2. Form 2 beef patties, season with salt and pepper, and cook in the same skillet over medium-high heat for 3 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Wipe the skillet clean and add the remaining 1 tablespoon butter. Toast the bread slices, buttered side down, in the skillet for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches by adding Swiss cheese, cooked patties, half of the caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese on the bread in the skillet. Place the other slices of bread on top, buttered side up.
  5. Cook the sandwiches over medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Cheese swap: Try cheddar, provolone, or American cheese if you prefer.
  • Bacon: Add crispy bacon for extra flavor and crunch.
  • Spicy kick: Add hot sauce or jalapeños for a spicy version.
  • Vegetarian: Use veggie burger patties for a plant-based option.
