Description
This deep hamburger sausage pie is a mouthwatering dish with a rich combination of beef, sausage, pepperoni, and cheese wrapped in a golden, flaky crust. It’s the perfect comfort food with an Italian twist.
Ingredients
2 ready-bake pie crusts (450 g total)
200 g shredded mozzarella cheese
100 g shredded cheddar cheese or provolone cheese
225 g ground beef
225 g Italian sausage, casings removed (optional)
100 g pepperoni slices
350 ml pizza sauce or marinara sauce
1 tsp Italian seasoning
0.5 tsp garlic powder, plus extra for topping
0.5 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
45 ml melted butter (for brushing crust)
Instructions
- Prepare the meats: In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and Italian sausage until thoroughly browned. Drain any excess fat and set aside to cool slightly.
- Preheat oven: Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F).
- Prepare the pie crust: Roll out one of the pie crusts to fit a deep-dish pie pan or deep skillet. Spread half of the mozzarella cheese evenly over the base.
- Layer the meats: Evenly distribute the cooked ground beef, Italian sausage, and half of the pepperoni over the mozzarella cheese.
- Add the sauce and seasonings: Pour the pizza sauce or marinara sauce evenly over the meat and pepperoni. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and optional red pepper flakes for a little heat.
- Top with cheese: Scatter the remaining mozzarella cheese and shredded cheddar or provolone over the meat mixture. Arrange the remaining pepperoni slices on top of the cheese.
- Cover and bake: Place the second pie crust over the filling and crimp the edges to seal. Brush the top crust with melted butter and lightly sprinkle with garlic powder.
- Bake: Bake on the center rack for 20–25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for several minutes before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
Vegetarian Version: Swap the meats for a mix of sautéed vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, and zucchini for a vegetarian-friendly deep-dish pie.
Spicy Twist: Add extra red pepper flakes or a few dashes of hot sauce to the pizza sauce for a spicier flavor.
Different Cheeses: Experiment with different types of cheese such as gouda, mozzarella, or a blend of Italian cheeses to change the flavor profile.
