Description
This homemade French onion dip is rich, creamy, and full of flavor, made with caramelized onions, sour cream, and mayonnaise. It’s perfect for parties, movie nights, or a simple snack.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 ½ cups chopped onion
¾ teaspoon kosher salt, divided
1 cup sour cream
1 cup mayonnaise
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon ground white pepper
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and ¼ teaspoon of kosher salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 20 minutes.
- Remove the skillet from heat and let the onions cool for 5 to 10 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, white pepper, and the remaining ½ teaspoon of kosher salt.
- Once the onions have cooled, stir them into the sour cream mixture.
- For the best flavor, cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
- For added flavor, mix in fresh chives or parsley after the dip has chilled.
- Substitute Greek yogurt for mayo for a lighter version.
- Add a dash of hot sauce or chopped jalapeños for a spicy kick.
