Description
Homemade crumpets are soft, spongy, and perfect for breakfast or brunch. With their warm, golden crust and airy centers, they provide the ideal base for butter, syrup, or jam.
Ingredients
5 g Yeast
1 cup Plain Flour
1 tsp Salt
2 tbsp Butter
2 cups Warm Water
Instructions
- In a bowl or jug, mix the yeast with a few tablespoons of warm water. Stir until the yeast dissolves, then leave for about five minutes.
- In a separate bowl, add the salt and sift in the flour. Whisk about 2/3 of the remaining water into the flour, then add the yeast mixture.
- Cover the bowl and leave the mixture in a warm place for about an hour or until it has doubled in size. The mixture should be thick yet pour easily. Add more water if necessary.
- Heat a frying pan gently and spray with canola oil.
- Lightly grease egg rings with canola oil and place them in the pan. Pour enough batter into each ring to fill it about halfway.
- Cook on a low heat for about 4 minutes, or until small holes appear and the tops of the crumpets look pasty.
- Carefully remove the egg rings and flip the crumpets to brown the tops for about 1 minute.
- Butter lightly and serve hot. They are wonderful with golden syrup or jam.
Notes
- For a slightly nuttier flavor, you can replace plain flour with wholemeal flour.
- To make vegan crumpets, substitute butter with a plant-based alternative and ensure the yeast is activated with warm water.
- If you don’t have egg rings, you can use cookie cutters or a similar round mold to shape the crumpets.
