Description

The Italian Meatball Sub combines hearty, flavorful meatballs, rich marinara sauce, and gooey cheese in a toasted sub roll. It’s the ultimate comfort food perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a weekend treat that brings the family together.

Ingredients

2.5 lbs Midamar Fully Cooked Italian-Style Meatballs

2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 tbsp olive oil

6 oz tomato paste

28 oz can of whole peeled tomatoes

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp salt

1 tbsp basil

1 tbsp oregano

48 sub rolls, sliced like hot dog buns

½ stick of butter, melted

8 oz block of provolone, shredded

4 oz fontina, shredded

Instructions

  1. Add garlic and olive oil to a Dutch oven and cook until fragrant. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add the whole peeled tomatoes, sugar, salt, basil, and oregano. Mix everything together, cover, and let simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Add the Midamar Fully Cooked Italian-Style Meatballs, cover again, and simmer for an additional 15 minutes. If the sauce is too thick, add ½ cup of water and bring it to a boil for about 10 minutes.
  4. Brush the sub rolls with melted butter and toast them over medium heat in a non-stick skillet.
  5. Place each toasted roll onto a large sheet pan. In a mixing bowl, combine the cheeses and layer each bun with cheese, followed by meatballs and sauce. Top off with a final sprinkle of cheese.
  6. Bake the subs at 425°F for 5 to 10 minutes. For a browner cheese top, broil for about 5 minutes, checking every minute.

Notes

  • If provolone and fontina aren’t available, substitute with mozzarella or a mix of your favorite cheeses.
  • For a spicy kick, add red pepper flakes or hot sauce to the marinara sauce.
  • Vegetarian option: Replace the meatballs with sautéed mushrooms, peppers, and onions, topped with your favorite cheese.
  • To keep the sub from getting soggy, toast the rolls before adding the sauce and meatballs.
