Description
Soft, buttery, and irresistibly fluffy homemade dinner rolls that are perfect for any meal, offering a golden, slightly crispy exterior with a soft, melt-in-your-mouth interior.
Ingredients
1 cup (240ml) whole milk, warmed to about 110°F (43°C)
2 and 1/4 teaspoons Platinum Yeast from Red Star instant yeast (1 standard packet)
2 Tablespoons granulated sugar, divided
1 large egg
1/4 cup (4 Tbsp; 56g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature and cut into 4 pieces
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups (390g) all-purpose flour or bread flour (spooned & leveled)
Optional topping: 2 Tablespoons (28g) melted unsalted butter mixed with 1 Tablespoon honey
Instructions
- Whisk the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar together in the bowl of a stand mixer. Cover and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Add the remaining sugar, egg, butter, salt, and 1 cup of flour to the yeast mixture. Mix on low speed for 30 seconds. Scrape down the sides and add the remaining flour. Mix on medium speed until the dough comes together and pulls away from the sides of the bowl (about 2 minutes).
- Knead the dough for about 5 minutes using the dough hook or by hand on a floured surface. The dough should feel soft but slightly tacky.
- Grease a large bowl, place the dough inside, and turn it to coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap, foil, or a clean kitchen towel. Allow it to rise for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 14-16 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and arrange them in a greased 9×13-inch baking pan (or two round pans).
- Cover the rolls with plastic wrap or a towel and let them rise for about 1 hour, or until puffy.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, rotating halfway through, until golden brown. Optionally, brush with the honey butter topping.
- Let the rolls cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Storage: Store leftover rolls at room temperature for 2-3 days or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- Freezing: You can freeze the unbaked rolls after the first rise. Once frozen, place them in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Thaw and let rise before baking as directed.
- You can freeze the baked rolls and reheat them in a 300°F (149°C) oven for about 10 minutes.
- To make fluffier rolls, avoid adding too much flour during kneading and let the dough rise in a warm environment.
